Planting Common Milkweed

Postby terrifly » Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:19 am

I am in the process of transplanting some new small common milkweed plants and I need to know if it is ok to plant them near a summer sweet/spice bush ?
I know the spice bush attracts butterflies and bees but also attracts alot of flying insects of all kinds.
Thank you

Do you have these other plants in part shade or full sun? In my experience, the common milkweed will end up roaming no matter where you put it. It runs under ground by rhizomes.

They are in an area that gets a pretty good amount of sun but gets a tiny bit of shade at the end of the day. I just did not know if the summersweet would attract some unwanted pests to the milkweed since milkweed has its own problems.

Luckily, the summersweet doesn't bloom that long. The summersweet will attract wasp. Wasp eat caterpillars, but in my yard the wasp find the caterpillars anyway. I usually bring in the caterpillars to raise since there are way too many wasp in my yard. The yellow jackets (wasp) are out in full force now.

I was thinking the wasps might be a problem. I might move that summersweet to another location because I have a nice little area for a milkweed patch and I would just rather have it all milkweed anyway.
Thank you
