Milkweed (Asclepias) Seeds and Plants

Postby Mona Miller » Tue Mar 16, 2010 9:55 am

First, do a state search.

http://plants.usda.gov/checklist.html
Put in Asclepias and then click your state. My state is Virginia. Here are the results for Virginia:
http://plants.usda.gov/java/stateSearch ... eField.y=5

I'm starting a current plant/seed list for places to buy milkweed (Asclepias). If you know of a good source that I haven't list, then please share it. Just reply to this topic and any input would be appreciated. I've been working on a native milkweed collection at the botanical gardens where I volunteer (Meadowlark Botanical Gardens). You won't find the milkweed planted in one location. Some of it will be woodland, others wetland, others meadow.

Scroll down for a long list of native nurseries. You just have to search their lists to find milkweed (asclepias).

What kind of growing conditions are talking about if we were to try these out in a mountain greenhouse out of the native area?

I have been doing a little bit of research on my own question and was a little bit surprised at what I found especially regarding the method of watering the plants. It seems like a standard greenhouse can produce a stable plant, but different hoses and watering methods and schedules can make a really big difference in what we see as the final result. Have any of you ever used teejet spray nozzles?

I haven't tried these, but do use a shower setting (water hose nozzle) when watering.
