Re: Shopping for milkweed Seeds -- Favorite Online Sources

Postby Mommabyrd » Mon Sep 07, 2009 7:55 pm

I am going to a Monarch film premier this weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and thought it would be wonderful to hand out milkweed seeds after the movie. The film highlights Monarch migration, habitat in Mexico and the need for milkweed in the States. Where is the best/most cost effective place to buy bulk seeds?
Thanks!

I buy my tropical from Johnny's select seed. I don't know of a cheap source for perennial that could get them to you in less than a week.

Richters Herbs, which is listed above your post has the best price and quality.

I did a Google Search for "pictures of milkweed seeds":

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=n ... weed+seeds
This should give you some idea of what milkweed seeds look like.

I like Prairie MOON Nursery. They pre condition seeds for planting if necessary but you can request them not to as well. I think it's important to pay attention to which milkweed is native to your area.

In New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Portugal the monarch migrations would go extinct if the people there had a "natives only" philosophy about milkweed because no native milkweed species occur in those countries.

Really? So are Monarch butterflies introduced species in those countries? Swan milkweed is an African native so I thought there would be other species and those might be native/distributed along the nothern shores of the Mediterranean as well. Austraria and NZ are particularly careful about allowing non-native species now.

Be that as it may, there are North American regionally native milkweed species. I had a really good link for milkweed species native distribution map. I'll see if I can find it unless someone else has it handy.

I use Prairie Moon Nursery for my seed as well. I'm restoring a 5 acre prairie and wetland and they not only have great seed quality, they are so helpful with the process. They work with native plants and now have a great link on their website that will tell you if the plant is native to your area.

www.glorious-butterfly.com has a small assortment of milkweed seeds but great prices. Also she is currently runing a contest where you can win a $50 gift card and a large caterpillar cage for designing a bulletin board. Her website is a great resource for teachers also.

Right and that's a huge irony because if today's rules against non-native plants and animals were enforced 150 years ago then there would be no milkweed in New Zealand or in the temperate zone latitudes of Australia and so the monarch migrations in those countries wouldn't exist.

I think the deal historically was that the milkweed fluff was used to stuff pillows and mattresses. So, the milkweed ended up being transported naturally from one area to another.
