moving a chrysalis

Postby jen » Sun Aug 06, 2006 1:42 pm

Hi
One of my new cats formed it's chrysalis inside the tomato cage enclosure this morning. This is my first time using the cage. I previously just used those dollar store bug cages (the larger ones) for caterpillars/chrysalids/emerging monarchs. Instead of j hooking from the top of the net, the cat used a leaf on an almost eaten up stalk of milkweed. There are six more cats in the cage, still pigging out, so, obviously, I need to move it. Can anyone suggest how to do this easily? Can it be attached to the top inside of the tomato cage, on the netting? The cat climbed to the top several times "checking it out", I guess he didn't find it suitable. Did I do something wrong at the top? Or do some prefer to pupate on leaves? It was amazing to watch, I've never been present for the final shedding/ chrysalis forming. I did manage to get it on video tape!I'd appreciate any advice... Thanks in advance.
Jen
P.S. I also have another chrysalis, formed over a week ago. Should I move him, too, into the tomato cage, so they can emerge in the same spot?

Can you just pull of that leaf and put tape it to the top of another, where no cats will try to eat the leaf? I've trimmed stems and such when I find a chrysalis outside and tape to roof of my butterfly castle. I tape them with packing tape and them just peel the tape off the plastic and discard, once the butterfly has emerged.
