I set my first butterfly free yesterday

Postby Fedofairy » Wed Aug 02, 2006 8:03 pm

Hi everyone

I've been raising Monarchs from eggs this summer because the first brood I saw in my butterfly garden disappeared when they were still small (I'm thinking birds got to them, my downstairs neighbor has three bird feeders and several bird houses on our property). Now when I see an egg (Monarchs must be desperate around here because I find new ones almost every day and I've got quite a set up going on for each stage of their development) I gather it and raise the catapillers inside. Yesterday my first butterfly emerged from a chrysalis, a beautiful male, and I had the joy of letting him go. Too bad my tagging kit hasn't arrived yet. I hope it arrives before the next one emerges. Just wanted to share :D

It never stops being exciting to see one released! I set a male free yesterday and then an hour later ( thanks for nothing weather channel  ) a terrible storm came through. After the storm passed he flew passed my window.. as if to assure me that he was O.K.
