Covering whole plants?

Postby Stripe » Thu Jul 20, 2006 4:17 pm

I have 30 two to three day old cats inside. I really do not want to bring any more inside since I am leaving in a week or so for vacation. But today I watched 2 - 3 females lay 30+ more eggs on my common plants and my vine milkweed. A few plants have 10 plus eggs. These are oldish looking common plants already with a lot of aphids and ants. Does it work to cover a whole plant in the yard? I was thinking of fashioning something using tomato plant cages/fences and mosquito netting. Can I spray the plants down first with a water hose sprayer to try to rid them of aphids and ants and then net the whole plant. Will this work? Will I come home to safe little caterpillars happily eating?

We have covered plants at school. In my experience it does work. I have also hosed off aphids,earwigs,mites.etc.
I think Jim posted a picture of the plant covers that Monarch Watch sells.
The plant covers we used at school were really similar to them.
Or.. you could tell those females to fly this way! 8)
My garden seems to be in a lull. :(
