Monarch repair

Postby butterflylover90 » Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:57 pm

I recenty found a monarch butterfly with it's two right wings damaged. I am willing to repair the wings but I don't know what type of glue to use. And I only have one wing that i found on the ground a long time ago. Where can I find more?

I think it was hit by a truck but I'm not sure. The butterfly has been able to get some lift off the ground but only about 4 or 5 inches. But I was thinking that maybe I could trim the wings but would it be able to carry its body weight?

I accidently broke a wing once. Half a forewing, but still attached by a little bit, though it was dangling. The monarch could not fly until I tore the dangling half off, then amazingly it could fly. Not that great, but able to get to flowers at least. I always wondered if it would be possible to carefully superglue/graft a wing back together. I don't like to mess with living things like that though. I'd put it in the freezer.

If I were at home I think I might euthanise it in the freezer as psi suggested, too.
If I were at school I know the children would want to care for it. We hand fed a painted lady butterfly that was malformed that way for weeks.
I know I would be scared to try any grafting.. although I have heard of it before.
Let us know what happens!

Well today I did it. I repaired the wing. But I never found a second wing so I just fixed the top one. I followed the instructions from www.livemonarch.com/hospital.htm and after I was done it started to move a little bit...and now I think I killed it. It isn't moveing anymore. I thought the AC was makeing it cold so I took it outside and after a half an hour it still isn't moving. I think I screwed up something #-o .
