buying caterpillars

Postby linda49 » Tue Jul 11, 2006 11:01 am

I am on the search to buy larva as well. " Live Monarch" in Florida looks good - good prices (www.livemonarch.com). Too bad I'm in Canada and they don't ship here. I can only find "painted lady" larva - unless I buy the butterflies at $15. each. Wonder what the odds are that I'd have any sucess with them mating and laying eggs?

Linda

Check out http://www.greenwaybloom.com/

They raise monarchs and offer kits. Being in Canada, they might be able to help you. They are near Kitchener, Ontario.

Thanks John! I've spent over 20 hours in the past week searching the internet for larva in Cnada. Could only find Monarch's for "Wedding Releases".

It should be easier than it is.....One source says less than 1% of the generation survive....it's fairly obvious the good people here increase those odds by a significant amount. I'm ready to help....the stats say I'm not.

These may be the only two sources that have caterpillars this spring:

http://www.monarchprogram.org/livestock.htm
http://www.utterbackfarms.com/

The latter source may sell only chrysalids.

The best plan is to plant milkweed and other nectar plants. If you plant it, they may come.
