My joy over the emerging African Monarch is a little tempered as I see that a small piece of the chrysalis is after 4 hours still stuck over the head and covers one antenna and the whole of the eyes and mouth, its wings are fine straight, open and close but offcourse flying is out off the question. Does this covering come off by itself?
I am afraid to damage the eyes and mouth and better consult with the experts first.

Update: everything got resolved. After this morning the monarch was still sitting with the "mask" I took a deep breath and somehow got it off, micro surgery that was, but it helped. Prepared honeywater (1/3 honey 2/3 water) and let this drip from my finger on a butterflyweed flower. Yes!!! He is drinking also from the drop hanging from my finger!
The only thing which did not straighten out is one antenna which hangs but he is flying thats what important....
In the meantime the second monarch got born and I managed to film this somehow.

Thanks,
Anika

An update

I set the 2 monarchs free after a day and they flew off. There are plenty of flowers blooming allthough at night its pretty cool. Who do I find a day later in the field behind my house? My friend with the crooked antenna and by this time also two ravaged wing tips. He looked pretty bad and exhausted. I took him back home and since then he feedsfrom honeywater I drop on a butterflyweed. My last pupa came out yesterday into a beautiful butterfly. Now my dilemma is to set them free again since this is really not their season in this area yet.
