What happens inside the crysalis?

Postby Jer » Fri Jan 13, 2006 10:00 am

Can someone please tell me what happens inside the crysalis? What moves around inside? What happens inside the coccon? What happens chemically or physically to the caterpillar? Where can I find more information about this?
Thank You

The buterfly or moth caterpillar changes into an adult in the chrysalis. Wings develop, mouthparts change (from chewing to sucking), the legs change, reproductive organs begin to mature, etc.

Not all chrysalis move. (Monarchs, for example, do not.) If a chrysalis does move, it is the butterfly or moth inside making the chrysalis move.

Not all butterflies or moths make cocoons, either. Most moths spin a silk covering around their pupa, creating a cocoon. Most butterflies molt and form the pupa. This naked pupa is also called a chrysalis.
