When to buy caterpillars for fall migration?

Postby Keith Petrosky » Sun Nov 20, 2005 3:13 pm

What month must I purchase 1st instar/newly hatched caterpillars to ensure they turn into the monarchs that will migrate to Mexico, and I can tag them. I live in New York.

Knowing that it takes about one month for monarchs to complete their development (egg-adult) you can figure out the peak of the migration in your area based on your latitude:

and then work your way backwards to get an idea of when you should be looking for (or receiving) young larvae.
