Where do my Monarchs migrate to?

Postby MONA » Sun Sep 18, 2005 5:59 pm

I live in Hampstead, North Carolina and wondered if the Monarchs I raise will migrate to Mexico or Florida. If they migrate to Florida, does anyone from the University of Kansas collect them? Should I buy tags if I live here?

Tagging in North Carolina

Postby Jim » Mon Sep 19, 2005 10:04 am

Hi Mona: If you check out our handy Tag Recovery Database at

http://www.monarchwatch.org/tagmig/recoveries.htm

you'll see that we have had 37 recoveries in Mexico from North Carolina. Additionally, we have had only 1 monarch tagged in NC recovered in Florida (out of the 110 total recovered in FL). Florida is still somewhat of a question mark and we certainly need more taggers in the east/southeast so I would certainly encourage you to tag monarchs in your area!

Happy Tagging! :cheesy:

Is the number of Monarchs that were tagged in North Carolina retrievable from this http://www.monarchwatch.org/tagmig/recoveries.htm database?

RELEASED 15 TODAY WITHOUT TAGS

Postby MONA » Tue Sep 20, 2005 9:30 pm

My internet has been down for two days. I'm sorry I didn't get your reply before I released my butterflies. Had 15 hatch this morning. The monarch laid eggs on plants I had in the ground for approximately 3 to 5 days. This is my first "broad". I guess this is what I call them. Thanks for the info.

No - this is only a recoveries database...we are still entering data from datasheets. We have something in the neighborhood of 750,000 records going back to 1992 so this is no small task and we just don't have the resources to get through it quickly.

Do my butterflies migrate from Hawaii?

Postby dancetta » Mon Mar 06, 2006 2:37 pm

I just released my first 5 butterflies this past week. BEAUTIFUL! The temperature here at this time of year between low of 60's at night to low 80's in the day. Do our monarchs migrate and if so where?
