Where are the monarch?

Postby Schmetterling » Thu Jul 07, 2011 3:27 pm

Anxiously awaiting. Have only seen a couple monarchs this year and so far no eggs. Have the largest crop of milkweed ever, although something has taken a liking to eating it overnight right to the ground. Never had that issue before. Did find swallowtail eggs on my bronze fennel today, so at least something is happening. Anyone else in Michigan seeing any monarchs. Most of their favorite nectar plants are nearly in bloom, so it should't be long. :D

I have been breeding monarchs and looking for good homes to raise them. I've given away about 800 eggs or small cats this week and have 2 pair mating tonight (July 8th). More eggs have already been laid today but I'll collect them in the morning.

Send me an email asap & we can work out a delivery spot. How many dozens do you want to take care of? Or hundreds?

I've been wondering the same thing. In past years I've always had cats by this date, but this year I haven't even seen any adults!

I do have some kind of cats eating my milkweed. They're black and fuzzy, and they're stripping the milkweed down to the ribs of the leaves. I would like to know what they are, if anyone knows, please help me. I don't have a digital camera, so I can't post a pic.

If they are yellow & black with white tufts, they are probably Milkweed Tussock caterpillars. I just found them covering my leaves - remind me of tent caterpillars the way they are all covering one leaf, crawling all over each other - Uck! I am not sure what to do with them.

Milkweed Tussock Moths.
I usually drown them in some soapy water. They eat way too much milkweed and there are usually way too many of them.
