EXTREMELY late bloomer in SE Michigan

Postby ellercircus » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:00 am

We have a monarch that has been in it's crysallis since 9/23 and is just now coming out! Everything has been extremely slow with this one. I'm worried about what to do with it when it's out. It's in an enclosure with several Black Swallowtail crysallises which I've moved into the house temporarily because of the Monarch's apparent emergence. It's 43 degrees out with a very cold wind today and we've already had a couple of hard frosts, so there's no food outside for it.

Should I just keep it in the house until it dies? Or is there some chance it'll make it's way south? This is our first experience with raising caterpillars - have no clue what to do.

so he eclosed, but I found him on the floor struggling (don't know how long he was there), I got him up to hang, but seems to be very deformed in the wings, and has a very fat abdomen. Does this sound like the dreaded OE? (had several Monarch cats die, this was the only one to pupate) I don't know how long to wait before putting it in the freezer, if that what needs to be done :(
