Words to recite when releasing monarchs

Postby mflutterby » Tue Sep 28, 2010 10:39 am

Does anyone have any special prayer or wording to recite when we release our monarchs. I just feel like I should be saying something meaningful, as we send them on their way. I'm sure I could come up with something, but I thought there may be something out there already that others say. :)

Probably not what you had in mind, but when I got married my sisters surprised me by giving everyone at my ceremony a monarch to release at the end.

One sister got up and read a verse that went something like this:

If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

(Yes I was bawling!)

So you can always WISH! Even if it's just for a healthy life for the guy you're releasing!

That was lovely. :D

 We just say : " B'bye! Have a safe trip to Mexico!" :cheesy:

It's interesting to note that when we're releasing with kids who have never seen Monarchs before, some of them say "Thank you!" to the butterflies as they watch and wave as long as they can see them.

I'm sure that works too!

The Monarch release is a great story though. First a brother-in-law mistakenly released a bunch that were meant for the wedding, then it was the most bizarre cold evening in August (it's NOT cold in Ohio in August!) and my sisters didn't know if they would fly... They went to such trouble for me!

I always tell them to go forth and multipy and to come back to visit me.

During events we tell them farewell by saying, Adíos amigo/amiga (amigo for a male friend, amiga for a female friend) because we hope they will make it to Mexico.

Releasing a butterfly is one of the exciting moments of the rearing process for me. I have tended to them meticulously in plastic boxes, and become attached to the little critters, which seems contrary to their life in the wild. Then when they fly off, they are flying to their freedom in the wild, where they belong.

I usually say "Have a nice life! Hope you make it to Mexico!"

I always say "Good luck little butterfly, have fun!" They seem to be such happy creatures.

I released one yesterday, told him to be on his way and be quick about it! I hope he traveled far before the great winds swooped in...

I saw one two days ago and thought that he/she may be too late to get to where it needs to be. I hope I am wrong. :(
