Monarch with three wings

Postby shallowrain » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:24 pm

So, I was tagging this monarch that we had reared, and we noticed that it is missing one of its wings on the bottom set. This caterpillar had odd coloration as a larvae, and I'd made a note of which chrysalis it was on the rack so that I could monitor it. I'd been hoping to get a picture of an orange chrysalis or a white monarch, but not this.

Other family members want to put it down and pin it because they think it won't survive migration, and I don't think it looks to good to fly. Has anybody else ever had anything like this?

Pics below, from when I took them as a caterpillar and as it's been out now.

I say pin it. Even if it can fly, it probably won't help the gene pool. :(

I had a pupae that didn't have a good outer shell. The butterfly is missing its upper wing and part of one of its legs. Check for OE. If it is okay, then let it roam in the garden until it dies a natural death. A little bit of sun and air is better than nothing. I've had some butterflies live for several days. Each time I see them, I put them onto the flowers.
