fluid beneath chrysalis?

Postby Seanaldo » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:45 pm

Just found a puddle of thick clear fluid next to the shed skin beneath a new chrysalis. Is this normal? I'm worried that I may have bumped it when replacing the milkweed for the last cat of the bunch but all the chrysalises appear to be in normal condition.

It would be green, if it were the insides of the Monarch pupa dripping out. Hang in there. You can transfer it out of the container when it hardens. Just spritz it with water, wait 10 seconds, and the silk will be loose--thank you Dr. Urquhart for the information. I use a stick pin with a plastic top. That can be pushed through the silk just beyond the cremaster (black stem). Then pin it into a net container. Stick pin (sharp point) out.
