deformed monarch butterfly wings

Postby Belawoods » Mon Aug 16, 2010 7:12 pm

Can anyone tell me about 1/3 of my hatched monarchs are not able to hatch out completely on their own and then have wings that are deformed making it virtually impossible for them to fly? I live in Northeast Indiana and have been doing this for 5 years. This is the first year anything like this has happened. Is it linked to the issues they had over the winter in Mexico? It concerns me a great deal because of the high mortality rate.
Thank you

Not every Monarch that has this problem as OE, but a lot of them do. Have you tested them for OE?

That being said are you misting your pupae. Perhaps this year your house is a bit dryer due to the hot weather. I mist mine with water from a spray bottle twice a day.

I took such good care of some other butterfly pupae that I had that the wasp that was inside of one emerged just fine. I also mist my other butterfly pupae, if they are inside. Air conditioning is very drying.
