Rearing Monarchs

Postby lbdesigns » Tue Jul 27, 2010 8:14 am

I live in the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. Several years ago I planted three milk weed plants in hopes of attracting Monarch butterflies. The milk weed patch has now grown quite large, but it has not attracted any Monarchs. I have searched the internet for larvae kits, but I have not found a supplier who will ship west of the Rocky Mountains due to USDA restrictions. I do not want to violate any such restrictions, but would like to help promote a return of the Monarch to the Willamette Valley. Are you aware of any resources for Monarch larvae kits that that can be legally purchased in Oregon?

Map of the continental divide. You can purchase butterflies from breeders who live on the western side.

It isn't cheap. There is overnight shipping. If you choose to do this, make sure you test the butterflies for OE before you release them.

There are 2 CA breeders on this list:

Any one on the west coast can ship you butterflies. You just have to contact a breeder and ask them if they have Monarchs.

This list has CA, OR, UT, and CO (depending on where they are located according to the map):
