1st eggs hatch in Buffalo, NY

Postby buffalowings » Sat May 29, 2010 4:57 pm

First 6 caterpillars (larvae) emerge on May 27th in Buffalo, NY. Eggs were found on May 24 & 25 on milkweed plants growing in front of a south facing wooden fence. Only 1 egg did not hatch. Leaves were picked and placed on lightly misted Viva paper towel in bottom of shallow plastic kitchen storage container (about 13x9x3). Lid set lightly on top. Paper towel is changed every couple of days and kept lightly misted with spray bottle. We have had temperatures in the 80's for last week.

In spite of hours spent outdoors planting, weeding, and watching soccer games, I have yet to see a monarch butterfly here in Buffalo, NY. But amazingly I did find a medium sized cat (but no eggs!) on my swamp milkweed, so they are here somewhere!

As I have mentioned to another "poster" from Connecticut, please post these on Journeynorth.org as well. There are tracking maps of the main stages (egg, cat, butterflies). THere are huuge blank spots in New York and New England, yet there are these posts on Monarchwatch that indicate the maps are far from complete.
