temp for Monarch release

Postby stacey16 » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:49 am

Just had a monarch hatch in SE Wisconsin and that very day we had a rainstorm and the next day a cold front came through. The temp. is only 51 degrees with the windchill. Tomorrow it's supposed to be sunny and high of 58 but then rainy for the next three days. Can this little girl really migrate or at least make it further south where it's warmer? I am going to have to feed her and I see that gatorade will work. I have flowers in the screenhouse with her but haven't seen her eat and I tried juicy juice but she hasn't even gotton her proboscis out. Might she need help with this? Should I bring her inside because tonight it is supposed down to 39 degrees?

I did a search for "temperature" on the all-forum page. See Mona's post at the end of this thread:

Thank you, I will check that out. Just went and bought gatorade and put some on a cottonball. She started eating right away as soon as her feet touched the cottonball!

The temperature today was warmer than predicted. It was partly sunny, windy and 61 degrees at 2:00PM and our monarch decided it was time to go. I took her out of the screenhouse on my finger and she moved her head from one side to the other. Two seconds later, she flew high into the air and went on her way. Tomorrow it is supposed to be warmer so I hope she has a chance to fly further South. :)

We had the same conditions here in NJ when I released my little girl this morning. Hope they meet up in Mexico!

Don't worry, unless there is a hard freeze and wet weather. They can withstand temps down to below 25 degrees if they are dry.
