Monarch egg missing!

Postby Juliane » Mon Sep 14, 2009 5:11 pm

My boyfriend and I went searching for larvae the other day and found one larvae, and I found what I believed to be an egg!!! I was so excited!

But later the next morning after we returned from harvesting some fresh milkweed for the larvae to eat, we ...noticed the egg on milkweed leaf was gone!

I am pretty sure it did not hatch because there was no black or brown tip on the egg. My boyfriend doesn't think the the larvae ate it, and so I am not sure what happened :(

I was thinking maybe it had to with how milkweed leaf I found it on started to dry up, and maybe this shrinking of the leaf (drying up) detached the egg, and it popped off?

Has anyone had an egg disappear on them? Or have some idea of what may have happened?

Thanks!!!

Other larvae will eat eggs. Separate them from the eggs.
