Extremely happy with success rate and no parasitization!

Postby BlizzardNole » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:00 pm

I released about 25 more adults today and have about 20 more for tomorrow. I have been VERY lucky as I have yet to have a parasitized cat so far. Now many I got as eggs, but I have brought in at least 30 if not 40 that I found outside as 4th and 5th instars and no problems. I wonder if it's because it's in a yard instead of out in a field (less parasites?) or just luck?

I've only had two hatch with problems -- one with slightly crumpled wings on one side that we're keeping, and one that died during hatching today.

My theory is that the predators build up after several years of raising butterflies. But, hopefully, it is just a theory and you won't have future problems.

predators go through boom and bust cycles. You are just lucky for the time being. :-)

Spoke too soon -- I lost a cat hangin in its "J" today. He just died in place with some green fluid dripping out near his head (close to where they start to split during pupation). :(

I put the poor thing in the freezer.

The flies get worse in the fall. Sorry to hear about your recent problem. :(
