Fallen Chrysalis - No Cremaster

I found one of my chrysalis on the bottom of my container. I carefully removed it and was going to tie a thread around the cremaster but there is not enough there to do so.

Will this chrysalis be o.k.? Will the butterfly be able to emerg properly. What type of container should I put it in? Should I leave it on the bottom of the pen or try to elevate it so when the butterfly does emerge it can get close to the top of the pen.

It will emerge fine if on the bottom (it's actually the procedure monarch watch uses in their labs from what I've read on this website)...You will need to attach some nylon screening around the inside wall of your container and place the chysalis on the bottom near the screen so it can climb right after emerging. It's very important for them to hang so they can fully extend their wings to dry in the correct shape. Gravity takes care of it, but you need the container to be tall enough. If you browse this site, you will find what monarch watch suggests and you may want to make one of these emerging chambers and carefully transfer the chysalis to that. I don't have time to search it out for you this AM...sorry...but I know it's here somewhere. I would hesitate trying to hang it...I have tried that, too, but had alot of problems, so I just stick with the "on the bottom" method and it's always worked. Good luck!

What about new chrysalis?
Cremaster came out like a plug
when I detached chrysalis from where it hung.
No leakage.

I've never had any luck with the butterfly continuing its metamorphosis when the cremaster comes off the top.

This is a video that I made on butterflies emerging from a laying down position. I use a net container that has net sides (one is clear plastic, I place this away from the light. The new butterflies seem to head toward the light when they are looking for a place to climb to inflate their wings.)
