Our totals for 2013

Postby skates4marty » Sun Dec 22, 2013 8:48 pm

The Monarchists of Anne Arundel County (5 people this year) raised and released 214 butterflies.

I read that the overwintering population was 80% lower than the 20-year average. Last year, we had seven Monarchists who raised 1,081 butterflies, so we saw an 80% decrease this year.

Mine was a disaster of a year...1,602 in 2012...2 in 2013. I can only hope for some improvement else its just me and the other native 'flies.

Didn't find one egg in 2013. Finally saw my first monarch in the fall and only saw 3 all season. Very disappointing.

Hi, just checking in to the Monarchwatch forums after a couple years, and can see that there are a lot of changes. Part of the reason I didn't post here at all last year was because there was no breeding activity in my garden in 2013 either. :(

Anyway, 233 in 2012, zero in 2013, and am thrilled to have 5 5th instar caterpillars so far this year.

I hope things pick up nicely in August.

I am curious how you all are doing for 2014. People here are seeing more monarchs this year. Have things improved by you?

It's great that you're finding new people. Hopefully they are enthused and helping next year.

I'm set to be over 200, which is way up from any past year totals. It's a good feeling and I hope to raise more next year.

Definitely enthused. One told me that she saw milkweed when out on a bike ride, grabbed some and strapped it to the back of her bike. I get a big kick out of getting new people involved. Also, it's more babysitters if I go out of town during high season...
