5 out of 6 of our plan B caterpillars are now in in pupa/chrysalis mode...as of Friday 11/27 and Sat. 11/28
Our caterpillars even had to travel out of state from New Jersey to Maryland and back home again as carefully as possible in the back of our mini-van to visit family for Thanksgiving holiday - an unusual addition to grandparents dining room!
As of today 11/29/09 9:30 pm East Coast time
2 of our 3 that were in our home-made habitat that exactly replicates instructions in plan B - are attached to the "ceiling' of our habitat HOWEVER they did not attach to the sandpaper we used - rather they attached directly to the tupperware/plastic. The last caterpillar in this habitat went into pupa on the floor of the habitat.
In our "extra" habitat which is a thinner /takeout food type container turned on it's side.. 2 out of 3 of the caterpillars are in pupa/chrysalis mode as of last night - but just one is attached and this one is not even attached to what we designed as the "top" with the sandpaper but instead attached itself via silk button near the front/upper third of the take-out containers clear cover. 1 of the 3 is in pupa loose on the floor of the container and another caterpillar is on the floor next to it...not sure if it's dying or about to go into pupa - been there all day...
we'll see in the morning. we hope to post our photos asap
note to everyone who's been posting on the forum and to the other classes and teachers out there..we've LOVED looking everyone's notes and photos and kids drawings! thank you all so much for sharing...
We were curious about the caterpillar on the ISS that was floating loose...what has happened to it and what does this mean for some of the questions regarding this issue in the experiement!
Another question for future...is there a transfer plan for the butterflies once they've hatched - I know we are not supposed to release them but I'm thinking they wouldn't survive long in these tiny tupperware habitats...ideas anyone?
Also..welcome home Atlantis!
