A question about the frass

Postby maria » Thu Nov 19, 2009 5:33 pm

This is a bit of a gross question, but are we too clean out the frass from the rearing chambers? Forgive me if I am overlooking the answer to this in any of the material provided. If there is frass on the food (bleck :P) do we need to scoop that off or not or ?????

Thank you for any information and help.

Regarding this experiment, I'm not sure about frass in the food.

Are we supposed to be opening the habitats?

I would think if we are then if it starts to look moldy, I'd scrap it out.
But, document which day this was done.

I was just thinking about your question.

Do you have your feeding containers positioned hanging on the back as specified in the experiment?

Or are the feeding tubs just sitting at the bottom of the habitat?

If the feeding cups are hanging on the back this should help minimize the frass in food.

I haven't cleaned any frass out, but I have added fresh food and cleaned out some dark dried up food.

We have our rearing chamber set up as the directions state including the feeding tray on the back wall no the bottom of the chamber, however the frass does stick to the tray and food. We just decided to clean off the top layer of the food where frass was present and that seems to be working.

Thank you for the replies. :)
