Monarchs and High Voltage Power Lines

Postby jhammer » Tue Feb 14, 2012 7:38 am

I am wondering if anyone has information about or research on effects (if any) of high voltage power lines and monarchs. Purpose of this is that I'm considering approaching local utility to see if a right-of-way they own could be planted in milkweed as a way station.

If monarchs are adversely affected by electro-magnetic radiation, it won't make sense to consider this area a potential way station.

Does anyone have knowledge of electrical power lines and monarch ranging/nectaring/egg-laying?

Thanks.

Many species of wildlife use power line right-of-ways. I know for a fact that they make wonderful butterfly habitat, but many power companies insist on cutting and herbiciding (weed, shrub, and tree killers) these areas. Some management does need to be done to keep the trees off the power lines. It can be successfully done to allow wildlife to use the area, too.

Here's a downloadable brochure that can be handed out to inform people about the need for more Waystations.
