Monarchs in Western Massachusetts

Postby mizzeliz » Thu Aug 07, 2008 6:19 am

I saw at least two Monarchs in Springfield, MA, July 31. It was a very warm day and the sun was shining. They were flying over and around the butterfly bush and the Tiger Lilies between noon and 1 PM. I have been growing Butterfly bush and Milkweed in my Perennial garden in the hopes of attracting and making a host site for Monarchs. I have not seen any eggs on the Milkweed. I will continue to look and report when I find eggs or caterpillars. mizzeliz

It took me a while to get my garden established, too, but sooner or later they will find the milkweed. Now I'm happy to say we have "oodles" of the little caterpillars that just hatched a few days ago busily chomping on the leaves!

August 7th, around noon, I saw 2 Monarchs in the garden. I was able to take pictures of them on the butterfly bush this time. They had not been tagged. One was much darker colored than the other. Then "Noah" floated by in the ark and the skies opened up with rain again.
