My Waystation(urban Toledo OH) is open and ready but no takers. The monarchs are just not here this year. We had one aberrant female on 5/1 and one other sighting mid-June but that is it. No eggs & no cats. All the beautiful mw in bloom and no one nectaring. Between the gypsy moth spraying back in early May and the mosquito spraying a week or so ago, we barely have any flying or crawling insects, period.
Kitty Todd Preserve, The Nature Conservancy, Swanton, OH, is fairly light in monarch numbers too. I count weekly in the same sites - 2 on 6/21 and 2 on 6/14. I saw eggs earlier in the season but none for the last 2 weeks. The preserve is protected so there is no spraying there...but still light in numbers.
How bad was the winter in Mexico? All these heavy rains in the Midwest slowing down the population ? [/url]
