Monarch sighted in Madison, WI

Postby GBMonarch » Mon Jun 02, 2008 6:02 am

Saw a handsome Monarch on the outskirts of Madison last weekend, but so far haven't seen any in Green Bay. I had eggs at the end of May last year, so it looks like this year is late starter. Milkweed is booming in my garden, so I'm ready when they come!

first sighting of season

Saw my first monarch while mowing in Connersvile, IN this afternoon. Couldn't tell if it was male or female. It was bright and new looking. My milkweed is 4 feet tall and budding. Looking at previous posts I have made, I realize this is a month earlier than I have seen adults previously.

2nd sighting

Postby SWAMPMILKWEED » Mon Jun 02, 2008 8:34 pm

On 5/31, I saw 2 monarchs at Kitty Todd Preserve, Swanton OH near Toledo. And numerous eggs are mw's. That was a plus. Bflys are slow in numbers this spring - been so cool, windy and wet winter. Also, I found 2 3rd instars tonight in the waystation. They had to have survived the gypsy moth BT spraying in mid-May because I have not seen any other eggs other than the ones since the aberrant female on 5/1/08. That spray has also eliminated the local cabbage white population...never thought I'd miss seeing those aliens.

I have only seen a couple of monarchs in the last month and no eggs or cats. Last year we had them in May by the dozens! I am missing my summer project. I only have two swallowtail caterpillars right now that I found about 3 weeks ago. No sign of more of them either! Anyone else having better luck than us?

My Waystation(urban Toledo OH) is open and ready but no takers. The monarchs are just not here this year. We had one aberrant female on 5/1 and one other sighting mid-June but that is it. No eggs & no cats. All the beautiful mw in bloom and no one nectaring. Between the gypsy moth spraying back in early May and the mosquito spraying a week or so ago, we barely have any flying or crawling insects, period.

Kitty Todd Preserve, The Nature Conservancy, Swanton, OH, is fairly light in monarch numbers too. I count weekly in the same sites - 2 on 6/21 and 2 on 6/14. I saw eggs earlier in the season but none for the last 2 weeks. The preserve is protected so there is no spraying there...but still light in numbers.

How bad was the winter in Mexico? All these heavy rains in the Midwest slowing down the population ? [/url]

I'm located in Lapeer, MI which is near the thumb part of the state. So far I have seen only one monarch. She was very faded, but I was lucky enough for her to select my backyard to lay eggs (8 of them). Usually I spot monarchs in mid May. I walk a two mile loop every day checking milkweek for eggs but have found no others. The milkweed is coming up great this year, but where are the Monarchs?
