Migration Along Lake Erie's North Shore

Postby dannus plex » Tue Sep 15, 2009 5:48 pm

Things are slowly picking up here, tagged 89 on Sept 11 in four and a half hours. The Monarchs are flying closer to the ground, nectaring longer and moving in a more general southwest direction. I tag at Hawk's Cliff near Port Stanley, Ontario. Lat 42.667 Long -81.217. We have had a cooler summer, with more days of overcast resulting in an extended period of growth for milkweed. Normally, it is finished by the end of July. I am still picking cats as of September 15. We seem to have a delayed, local migrating population which may extend the timeline of the overall migration.

400 Monarchs reported roosting this a.m. at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, Canada.
Cooler weather and 24 more hours of rain may increase the numbers.
