i found a caterpillar

Postby lola » Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:19 pm

Okay, my camera is broken, but i will describe my caterpillar as best i can.
its tan with dark triangle spots on back, but as you go closer to the head the spots get progressively lighter until theyre no longer visible. its head is black with 2 yellow lines forming part of a triangle. when threatened it seems to secrete a liquid. it poops brownish, but when dry the poo looks brown-green. it was on some sort of tall, wild, grass. it also likes to curl up in a ball when threatened. it is about an inch long.(think of the width of 1 finger)what on earth is this caterpillar!!!!!!!!!!!when i get my camera working i will post a pic.

We'll wait for the pictures.

Some times you can go on the bug guide and put in certain characteristics.

I put in triangular spots, caterpillar and got this:

It says it an army cut worm, but this may not be your caterpillar.

If not, try some other search words.

Not sadly, this is a real pest. The cut worms do a lot of damage in our gardens.

Nice. I'm glad you are documenting your aventures with raising Monarchs.

The website that's listed in my section is one for the Washington Area Butterfly Club. I don't maintain it, just promote it.
