Anyone know how to relocate a Gulf Fritillary chrysalis?

Postby laurel » Wed Dec 09, 2009 11:46 am

I have 10 Gulf Fritillary chrysalises attached to plastic lids. I need the extra lids for my 31 (!) Monarch cats. Anyone have any experience moving a Fritillary chrysalis? I could probably remove it easily, but how do I tie it? They don't have a cremaster like the Monarch pupae.

I just called Butterfly World in Coconut Creek and they had this excellent idea: Press regular scotch tape on the silk next to the chrysalis stem, and gently lift. The silk will come up, along with the chrysalis. Then you can tape the chrysalis to a branch or wherever you want to hang it. I just did this with five of them and it worked every time. Make sure the silk is dry when you try this.

Once the silk is dry, you can also spray with water. Water will loosen the silk. I take a stick pin with a plastic head. Carefully pull up the silk and then stick the pin thru the silk. You can use the stick pin to pin up the chrysalis. I use a net container and pin it by weaving in and out of the netting. Leave the sharp point on the outside of the container.
