Butterfly Mother's Day

Postby Mona Miller » Sun May 10, 2009 8:08 am

Happy Butterfly Mother's Day to all of us. Raising butterflies is just like having kids. I think I worry just as much about my butterflies as I do my own children. I've been out feeding them this morning. Finally, we are going to have a sunny, rain free day. My backyard is a big mud puddle. :cheesy:

Thank you, Mona, and a Happy Butterfly Mother's Day to you and all butterfly moms! We celebrated yesterday - when my son asked me if there was anything special I wanted to do for M. Day, I said absolutely! Once a year in May the Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit, MO has it's annual MO native plant sale. The

ooops - hit the button too soon............As I was saying the Shaw Reserve is part of the MO Botanical Garden & is about 35-40 miles from St. Louis. And what was I looking for? Milkweed, of course!! I bought As. syriaca & As. viridis - a very successful drive to the country! I planted them first thing today...........

Our big native plant sale at a local park is next Saturday, May 16. I already have plans to take a friend, a cart, and get there early. Milkweed(s) will be on our shopping list. :D

I'd advise all to go early, bargains don't last long. The Virginia Native Plant Society, Master Gardeners, and Rock Garden Society sell plants much cheaper than the many vendors that are part of the market. Good luck! :cheesy:
