Dark brown chrysalis

Postby Pixie » Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:24 pm

I have discovered a dark brown chrysalis hanging on the siding of my house. It sort of resembles a monarch chrysalis but it is rounded both at the top & bottom. It is definitely not a monarch, nor is it the shape of black swallowtail or painted lady. I can see some bluish color inside. Am wondering if it is a moth, but I have not been able to find anything online that resembles it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Actually, that *is* a monarch chrysalis - just not one that is healthy (probably not even alive). It could be diseased, parasitized, or otherwise preyed upon...such determinations are sometimes difficult.

I agree. I saw some pupae like this at a local school and had to tell the teacher that they were diseased or parasitized. The Monarch adults will not emerge from these. The best thing to do is to spritz with water and carefully remove with a clorox wipe and dispose of these. Wash your hands good. Sorry. :(
