Black swallowtails?

Postby mommy2myboys » Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:54 pm

i have a black swallowtail that i got at least a month ago from a local nursery when i saw it on some fennel. it made its pupa 2 days after i brought it home and it still hasn't eclosed! what gives? i brought it outside so i know its getting the warm air. Its pupa is brown and i had read somewhere that if its brown they are overwintering and green means there not, any truth to that? im clueless as to whether he didn't make it or i should hang on to him till next spring

They can be green or brown, so give it more time. The butterflies are absolutely gorgeous when they emerge!

Are you misting it? They should be misted at least two times a day. Inside the air conditioning can dry them out. It may winter over, but it could come out any day. I've had both Zebra and Pipevine Swallowtail winter over from a spring pupa. I just kept taking care of it all summer, fall, and winter.
