Waystation Map on Frappr

Postby MILW » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:39 am

Hi everyone, I'm trying to start a Frappr map to show the locations of our waystations- you can see it here:
http://www.frappr.com/monarchwaystations
 I'm not sure though if you need to join Frappr to be able to add yourself- but if you PM me your email address, I can send you an invitation to join.

Let me know if it doesn't work!

Waystation Map on Frapper

Postby Judy Molnar » Mon Jul 31, 2006 10:55 am

Great idea to do the map, but I'm confused.
Are you restricting this map to only Beta testers? or is it for all Monarch Waystations?
I'm not too keen on having a gender specific tag represent my employer's Waystation, and I and maybe others would rather not specify gender on such a map. Can we get neutral map tags?

Thanks,

I'm sorry, I wasn't too clear... I don't mind if any monarch enthusiast adds themselves, it is not restricted to beta testers. I'm not real happy with the gender tags either, but I haven't played around enough to find out if those can be modified. I think you can add yourself as a "Place" rather than a person- can you try and let me know if it works?

thanks! -Scott

Waystation Map on Frapper

Scott
I tried to register as a place, but Frapper wants me to join to do it and I don't think that's a good idea for my employer. And I don't want to join personally for myself either. Guess I'm stuck.

Ah well, I think I will look for an alternative to Frappr- I like the map idea, but too many people seem to have trouble with it :(
-Scott

Note- I found how to add generic marker icons, so I just made a bunch as "Waystation" with people and place marker types. If you send me your location as a zip code, and whatever you want the label to say, I can add a place marker for anyone without requiring you to give your email info to Frappr. :) Just PM me!

waystation locations

Postby sbowman » Sun Aug 06, 2006 1:05 pm

This is actually something I'm working on as a project for my GIS class at the University of Hosuton. Mapping all waystation locations by zipcode throughout the US. I'm 1/2 way into it, so it will be a little while before it is complete. I'm using GIS software ArcGIS. I'll be sending my final map to Monarch Watch for them to do with as they please.

Cool, I read about that on another thread. Have you ever worked with MapServer? (open source, so you can put your maps on the web for public access). Do you think the Monarch Watch guys will make your map accessible? I guess they must have supplied you with the waystation numbers and zip codes, eh? Do you have any other data tied to the map yet?
cheers- Scott

waystation map

Postby sbowman » Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:43 am

I haven't worked with any other map software and not proficient at ArcGIS. That is the software UH uses for geography. I used the available waystation listing found at this website for my data and zip code was the only info available to tie it to a map. I plan to send them (monarch watch) a jpeg file of the completed map for them to use in whatever way they want. I won't be identifying specific waystations, but the # of waystations in each zip code. Maybe include a few smaller maps with some landmarks of where the numbers of waystations are higher (like around monarch watch & the Houston Texas area). I'm not finished, so the final map(s) may change once I start doing the finishing touches.
