Lola The Monarch Butterfly With the Injured Wing

Postby Mona Miller » Sat Aug 25, 2012 8:33 am

Some times you get to witness a miracle. Someone brings you a female Monarch Butterfly that needs her wing repaired and she gifts you with eggs--Lola: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 134&type=3

She still cannot fly, but she has laid over 200 eggs. Her eggs will go to schools and other people who want to help conserve Monarch butterflies and also back to Debbie and Ellis--the angels who brought Lola to me.

Lucas injured his wing yesterday. I fixed it. He was in my garden today on the ground and totally missing the wing that I fixed. I brought him inside. I decided to hook up Lola and Lucas. So far, Lola's eggs have not hatched.

I carefully picked them up together and placed them in the middle of the caps of honey water. I did have to take a toothpick and unroll their proboscis. I had to laugh when Lola was finished, but Lucas wasn't and she began pulling him away. ; )

Let me introduce Lola's babies. Aren't they cute! They are making little holes in the milkweed already and also making tiny, tiny frass (butterfly poop).

Lucas Gets a New Wing
Here's a little video of Lucas with his new wing. Now he has 4 wings instead of 3. He still can't fly, but he is more stable. http://s964.photobucket.com/albums/ae12 ... ure002.mp4

Babies are now second instar

The baby caterpillars from the first group are growing fast. They are now second instars. There are 16 of them. Their poor momma lost one of her wings today. It was broken at the shoulder and it finally broke off. Would you believe she is still laying eggs. I feed her twice a day and make sure she has water, too by misting the container.
