Monarch Watch Public Tagging Event Today (Photos)

Postby psi_chemie » Sat Sep 16, 2006 11:41 am

I was at the tagging event today. It was much easier than last year. After going off trail, I was able to use all my tags in under an hour. Great weather, lots of butterflies!

I wish to apologize to all the spiders out there whose webs I messed up on my way through the flowers.

And I hope one of those cute monarch watch assistant girls calls me saying one of my monarchs was recovered :)

2006 Monarch Watch Tagging Event (Photos)

Postby Jim » Sat Sep 16, 2006 9:55 pm

It was a beautiful day for tagging at the Baker Wetlands in Lawrence, KS! We'll have more accurate numbers soon, but I can safely say hundreds of people turned out and thousands of butterflies were tagged today. Chip gave about fifteen tagging demonstrations to 20-30 people at a time and still managed to squeeze in several interviews today for local radio and newspapers, a KU documentary project, the New York Times, and a German film crew. We'll have more to say in an upcoming newsletter but in the meantime here are some quick photos of the day's events:

Awesome photos,Jim.

Jim.. I notice the posters in your pics.. and I saw similar ones at the Monarch Teacher Network workshop. Can they be purchased from Monarch Watch?

Thanks,
Hope

I whipped up the two posters in the 2nd photo (and several others) for some public events and never thought about making them available but you're not the first person to ask so I may try to make this a winter project. What did the posters you saw at the Monarch Teacher Network workshop convey? What kinds of posters would you like to see available from us? What size? At what price? There are a number of posters that I have had in mind but given our constant struggle with funding we have to prioritize our expenses and projects like this tend to fall by the wayside. Any input you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hiya Jim!
The posters were about:
1.The history of tagging,
2.The over wintering sites and
3.Monarch biology.
(I don't recall one about the Milkweed Community... but that would be a GREAT one too.)
10 dollars for a poster would not be prohibitive ( 9.95 is always a happy price point  )and maybe something like 22" by 24" would be a good size for a sturdy quality poster.
I would be the first one to buy these posters for our school Monarch display. It is important to convey this type of information to parents and student teachers so that they understand the importance of our school participating in Monarch related projects!
Thanks for thinking about creating these posters!

Jim,
The posters are a great idea. I would love to buy a couple for the education that I do at my school, and would love to do more Monarch outreach workshops here in western Massachusetts
Keep up the good work.

I had some older posters that I purchased from Monarch Watch several years ago that I loaned out and never got back.

I think one was on the complete migration both north and south with maps. And, the other may have been one on milkweed and monarchs.

I hate when things disappear when I loan them, but if I don't loan them the teachers can't use them to teach. Many don't have the money to purchase teaching materials. Too bad teachers don't make more money.
