Migration & Nectar Favorite

Postby Paula » Sun Sep 18, 2005 11:33 am

Water Snowball (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides variegatus) = Monarch Butterfly favorite (blooms thru October in Midwest) & is like a Monarch Magnet. A bloom size of large pea, appears fuzzy/whispy (similar blossom structure as formed by Ironweed, but smaller) is white & w/ strong sweet scent. Plant grows in clay soil within pot, placed into another larger pot of water - not necessary to have actual pond. Water Snowball not native to midwest & does not overwinter well indoors. Yet, Water Snowball worth replacing every year after observing VERY, VERY HAPPY Monarchs enjoying these lucious Water Snowball blooms during their long migrating journey south!!!

Where do you purchase your plants of this species?

A good native small tree for wet areas is Cephalanthus occidentalis L.
common buttonbush.

All sizes of butterflies love this including Monarchs.
