Some Good News From Dr. Orley Taylor

Postby dannus plex » Sun May 06, 2012 9:49 pm

"This is a spring like no other," says Dr. Chip Taylor of Monarch Watch. "Conditions have been consistently excellent for monarch reproduction for 6 weeks. Everything indicates that monarchs will rebound this year."

This is great news from Chip Taylor and the most optimism about the population that I have ever heard from him.

I have 3 Monarchs about to pupae and another 9 in first to second instar, plus several outside. I just don't have the milkweed available to bring them in. This is the earliest ever. Also, for the hummingbirds. They are here early, too. I'm not complaining!

The optimism will be replaced with worry as the season progresses. Like perhaps worry that the early season warmth will cause the milkweed leaves to mature too quickly and get too tough for the young monarch larvae to eat by late July or August.

I grow tropical, too. I'm a master gardener. I don't have to worry. I also have a nice nursery where I can buy more tropical.

I also cut back my common and swamp, this causes them to put forth new growth. And, I keep things watered, which is expensive--but, I'm taking care of the wildlife in my yard.

Don't worry, be happy--be prepared.
