Denise Gibbs (Naturalist, Black Hill Regional Park), me, and another friend were planting Seaside Goldenrod this weekend at Tom's Cove, Assateague, Virginia. Denise had raised these from seedlings. The area at Tom's Cove has suffered great destruction from two hurricanes that hit the area. I hadn't seen it since 2002. The 15 foot shrubs are gone near the park ranger station. Monarchs are being swept out to sea during days with winds of 20-30 miles an hour. Denise is working with the park service to try to create some buffers.
If you know of any grants or foundations interested in helping to revegetate this area, please email Denise at monarch301@verizon.net
I already want to go back next year to help plant more goldenrod. You should have seen those hungry Monarchs diving in to feed upon what goldenrods there were that had regrown in the area.
