It looks like a slow season at my gardens - I have managed to tag only 5 monarchs so far. I haven't seen any for several
days - now we have rains from the hurricane Gustav - hopefully it will clear this weekend & I will see more as the latitude suggests September for migration here in St. Louis. On the other hand, I have had up to 2 dozen cats, but not one has pupated to completion - something has happened during each pupation & they all died. I still have 4 cats out on the milkweed & I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will successfully pupate.

After what looked like it would be a slow year tagging Monarchs things are much better than expected. In 2 weekends I have used all 50 tags ordered and could have tagged at least 30 more. In my years of tagging I have never seen so many. In our area, Ottawa Canada, we had a lousy year with lots of rain and below normal numbers of Monarchs but they must have done better farther North because there have been lots in the last two weeks (mind you they are concentrated in small nectaring areas).
Good luck tagging.

The Monarchs are already in Texas. I was at our place on the Llano River last weekend and spotted 8 Monarchs, several laid eggs on the pink milkweed.

Have never noticed them this early before, but I think that's a good sign, and with recent heavy rains, there's plenty of nectar sources.
