I summer on Stonington Peninsula on Little Bay De Noc. That's in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I own a small field of several acres that house great numbers of Monarchs in late July early August and find myself the collector of the beauty,s via the camera. My most interesting if not horifing shot is a brown bettle capturing and eating a monarch catapiller at his/her home milk weed. Anyone interested in the photos. Not to buy just to share.....Chuck

If I had some common milkweed seeds, I'd mail some to you Mick. Looks like you'll need some fodder for them in the coming years.

I asked Mick if he wanted to respond to Jim Ellis' question and here is his response:

Good Morning Chip

It's a fine day in the Robson Valley - sunny, blue sky ...... lotsa moose on the move right now! I saw two separate cow/calf groups yesterday. Time to go hunting with my new digital camera. I should have thought of Jim Ellis' question - did the Monarch "hitchhike" it's way up here? I can confidently say "No, it was very much alive when I picked it up." It was badly disabled - top left wing was broken at the hinge - so I reluctantly gave it the 'thorax pinch'. But again, no, this far-flying King of Butterflies was very much alive when it was tossed to the ground. And I do have a witness - my old friend from the army, Spanky Glass of Snohomish, WN, was visiting. He was very surprised my eye could catch sight of a bug like that. I told him it was a trick old-time butterfly nuts develop. I'm sure you have this highly developed sense, eh!

Thanks for checking in with me.

I wonder about the possibility that the Monarch had been caught in the RV's apparatus somehow and got dislodged by the turbulence.
